What was the moon on the day you were born?
Enter a birthday, an anniversary or any date, and we draw the moon exactly as it was: its phase, how much of it was lit and how old it was. Add the time and the time zone for the most exact answer.
How we work out the moon
- We calculate the Moon's position for the exact moment with an astronomy library used by observatories' tools, then draw the lit part as it was.
- The phase name follows the almanac: if the exact new moon, first quarter, full moon or last quarter happened at any time that day where you were, that is the day's phase.
- That is why the time zone matters: a full moon late on one day in Los Angeles can already be the next day in Madrid.

The eight phases of the moon
Every 29.5 days the moon goes from new to full and back. Your print shows where it was on your date; here is what each phase is often taken to mean.
New moon
Dark and unseen: a fresh start, the night before everything begins.
Waxing crescent
A thin, growing sliver: hope and intention.
First quarter
Half lit and growing: decisions and courage.
Waxing gibbous
Almost full: patience as something grows.
Full moon
The whole face lit: celebration and things coming together.
Waning gibbous
Just past full: gratitude and sharing.
Last quarter
Half lit and shrinking: letting go and forgiving.
Waning crescent
A last sliver before the new moon: rest and remembering.
Questions
- Does the moon look the same everywhere on Earth?
- Almost: the lit part is the same everywhere at the same moment. Only the date changes with the time zone, and in the Southern Hemisphere the moon looks upside down, so the lit side is on the other side.
- I don't know the time. Is the answer still right?
- Yes. Without a time we use noon. The moon changes very little in a day, so the drawing and the phase name are almost always the same.
- Can I see the moon for a future date, like a due date?
- Yes: any date from 1900 to 2100 works, past or future.
