Frame size calculator: what size to print for your frame

Our seven sizes
Every order includes all of them. The PDF and the SVG are vector, so they stay sharp at any size; the PNG is 300 dpi except at 50 × 70 cm, where it comes out at about 260 dpi.

Frames with a mat
A mat is the card border inside many frames, and it makes the window the poster shows through smaller. An 11 × 14″ frame with a mat is usually cut for an 8 × 10″ print, and a 16 × 20″ frame with a mat often for an 11 × 14″. Check the label for the print size the mat is cut for; the window itself is a little smaller, so the mat overlaps the print's edges. Print that size, not the frame's.

How the calculator decides
- It compares your frame, or your mat, with our seven sizes, short side to short side and long side to long side. A print up to 3 mm (1/8″) smaller or 1.5 mm bigger counts as the same size, so a 21 × 30 cm frame takes an A4.
- If one of ours is up to about 1/8″ smaller on each edge, the frame's lip hides the gap. If it is a little bigger, you trim it, but only so far that the design's printed border still clears a 1/4″ lip; on 8 × 10″ and A4 that leaves no room to trim.
- If none is close, it suggests the largest of ours that fits, with a mat or a white border, and says so plainly if your frame is smaller than all of them.
